Here at Today is Fun, we are not kings, presidents or even mayors (but we do resemble models). We really don't have the power to declare a holiday, but we are going declare one anyway. We're going to start small and see where it takes us.
This weekend we are declaring our first "fifteen minute holiday." For fifteen minutes this weekend, find someone in your house and dote on them. Make sure they are comfortable, have everything they need, and just plain feel loved. Make them feel like they are "number one."
Here are some ideas on how you can encourage your kids to spend their fifteen minute holiday (but really, there is no right or wrong way to celebrate): You can make sure Dad has enough snacks while he is watching football. Or one kid can gather together all the parts for the Lego spaceship another child is building. Everyone can see if Mom needs some help fluffing her pillows while she reads her favorite teen vampire novel. Or make sure sister can find the glue stick, pens, and scissors while she makes one of her internationally prized art pieces. Try letting your little brother choose what cartoon he wants to watch on the DVR or make sure your dog has enough water and food.
The "fifteen minute holiday" can be expressed in many ways, but it is mostly about encouraging your kids to spend a few minutes being selfless and thinking of others. That kind of thinking should have its own specially commemorated holiday!
