Most adults have all heard of John Hancock and his famously large and flamboyant signature on the Declaration of Independence. It is so striking, in fact, that "John Hancock" has become a synonym for "signature" in the United States. Here it is; impressive, isn't it?

Well, in honor of John Hancock and his famous John Hancock, have your kids grab some paper and a pencil to create their own John Hancock. This activity is sure to add some flair to any worksheet, art project, or report you child turns in.
Start out with their first name, carefully looking at John Hancock's signature. The first letter should be very prominent, and if your child knows how to write in cursive, make sure they do it. Once the first letter is written, it's time for the remaining letters in their first name; these letter should be bold and neat. Follow that with a commanding first letter to start off the last name, then finish of the remainder of the letters. Once that is complete, have your child add some flair underneath their signature just like founding father John.
As with everything, practice makes perfect, so make sure your kids get lots of practice tonight before dinner, during a sibling's piano lesson, or even at your favorite restaurant. (Why do you think paper place mats were invented any way?) It is sure to be a hit!
