Unexpected Valentine

Shhhhhh!

Hearts are the traditional symbol for Valentine's Day, of course, and thankfully, they are easy to make.  Even boys like to make Valentine's hearts, we've noticed. This is the time of the year that hearts and lovey-dovey-ness are not too yucky for any kid!  Well, those things are tolerable.

Today, in honor of Valentine's Day, give your kids some free craft time to make an original, creative, and unexpected Valentine.[more] An unexpected Valentine one that a kid makes for someone that they would normally not think of giving a valentine. The special recipient can be an older neighbor, your mail carrier, the checker at the market, or even an older brother.  The key to this activity it thoughtfulness and creativity.

Once you guys have decided whom you are going to give a Valentine to, now comes the fun and creative part, with crayons, paper, glue and any other crafty supplies you have in the house.  Let your kids loose.  Let them make anything they want — it can be a card, a poster, a comic strip, a giant robot, or even a poem.  Then give the card away.

It's fun to see what kids make when there are no rules.   And it's even better to see a child being thoughtful and kind.  Happy Valentine's Day!
