Custom Crayon Nut Breakfast Bars

Not really delicious or nutritious . . . but creative and fun!

I don't know if this is true for your family, but my kids seem to eat a lot of "bars."  They eat granola bars, cereal bars, snack bars, energy bars, and even — around Halloween — an occasional candy bar.  I guess "bars" are just a big part of modern society's diet.

My two kids must have noticed the prominence of bars in our home, because yesterday they started drawing some bars of their own invention.[more]

They sketched out chocolate bars, of course, and something they called a cookies-and-cream bar.  Sure, you say, sounds reasonable.  But they also created a "robot monstrosity bar" and a "bug bar," not to mention their "British bar" (not sure what that one's about) and their "grease bar."  (I don't think Whole Food will want to carry that one.)

My kids really enjoyed this creative exercise.  They liked figuring out different types of bars to invent — everything from ideas they found delicious to ideas they found gross to ideas they found weird and funny.  A "bug bar," really?  Who wants to eat that thing?

So of course, our suggested activity today is . . . grab some crayons and your kids, and have them invent different varieties of edible (or semi-edible) bars!

Or, if your family isn't much into bars, have the kids invent new kinds of cereals, or fruits, or whatever inspires them.

The real nourishment here is not for your kids' stomachs, but for their budding creative impulses!

Have a great weekend, everybody.  And stay away from that bug bar.
