365 Thank You Letters

A big project to start the year

The beginning of the year is a great time to start a new project.

In my house, we're trying something this new year — and maybe you'd like to do it, too.  We're trying to send out 365 letters to people this year, thanking them for their contributions to this world.

Who will we find to thank?  The janitors at our local library.  Children's authors whose books we've particularly enjoyed. [more]  (Yes, I expect there will be a number of authors among those thanked.)  Maybe we'll reach out to a bonified hero or heroine or two.

We're not out to change the world, really.  But we are going to take a few minutes to say thank you.  The world could use more thanks.

We want the recipients of our letters to feel appreciated and valued.

If this idea sounds overly ambitious for your hectic life, maybe you could consider writing a letter a week to thank people who have touched your life?  Or maybe one or two a month?  If your kids could be involved — especially in choosing some of the recipients — all the better.

I hated writing thank you letters as a kid.  But I realize now that I have so much to be thankful for — and my mom taught me to be polite.

Do you have any suggestions for people to be thanked?

And what do you think of this idea?  Please let us know!  Thank you!
